Who is SNAP?

The Special needs Access Program is designed to enhance the quality of life for people with a mental illness.

SNAP is funded by the Department of Human Services and provides services in the Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Sale, Orbost and Yarram areas.

The program currently employs ten workers. Participants are matched with a member of staff who provides individualised and ongoing support.

 

What does SNAP do?

SNAP is funded to provide support services and recreational options for people who:

~ have a psychiatric disability

~ are over 16 years of age

~ live in the Shires of Wellington and East Gippsland

 

What are support services?

Support services are those services which assist people to live more comfortably with the effects of the disability and which enable clients to participate and manage int he wider community.

Support services are provided in a broad area including:

~ accessing appropriate housing

~ practical assistance with shopping, cooking, cleaning, budgeting

~ emotional support

~ assistance in joining intocommunity activities

~ advocacy

The support program is developed in a collaborative partnership between the client and the SNAP worker, and participation is voluntary.

 

What does the SNAP Leisure Program offer to participants?

~ Recreational experiences, such as bowling, tennis, yoga, painting, creative writing, patchwork and much, much more

~ "Open House" facilities, where participants can drop in and socialise with others

~ Involvement in outdoor adventure activities, such as camping, canoeing and bushwalking.

~ A break away from the daily routine

~ An access point to education and employment organisations
